Chimamanda Adichie explains why she was notoriously private about her pregnancy and the birth of her baby girl

Just some days ago, we woke up to the news that award winning writer, Chimamanda Adichie, had indeed been pregnant and now has a baby girl.

In a recent interview with David Pilling of Financial Times, the iconic writer confirmed that she and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege  welcomed their daughter weeks ago but decided to keep things private.

According to Chimamanda:

“This is the first time I’m saying it publicly. I have a lovely little girl so I feel like I haven’t slept … but it’s also just really lovely and strange.”

”This is the first time I’m saying it publicly. I have a little girl. I have some friends who probably don’t know I was pregnant or that I had a baby, I just feel like we live in an age when women are supposed to perform pregnancy. We don’t expect fathers to perform fatherhood. I went into hiding. I wanted it to be as personal as possible”

“In this country of mine that I love, people think that you’re incomplete unless you’re married.

When the interviewer asked if he could know the name of her baby,  she said “No, I won’t say”
