Karl Lagerfeld on Kim Kardashian’s robbery: 'You cannot display your wealth, then be surprised'

As even more harrowing details of Kim Kardashian’s armed hotel room robbery come out, there still are many questions that remain unanswered. And one of them comes from her friend (and sometime photographer) Karl Lagerfeld,
the creative director of Chanel. After his robot-heavy show Tuesday morning, he asked aloud how the star could have let such a thing happen.

“It’s a very bad thing for Paris, but I don’t understand why she was in a hotel with no security and things like this,” the Kaiser, 83, told reporters. “If you’re that famous and you put all your jewelry on the net, you go to hotels where nobody can come near to the room. You cannot display your wealth and then be surprised that some people want to share it with you.”

Though Lagerfeld’s opinion has been echoed by security experts, who suggested that Instagram posts flaunting her bling may have made the star a target for robbers, many others (including plenty of celebrities) have come to her defense, pointing out that showing off your jewelry in no way is inviting the kind of ordeal Kardashian underwent.

Lagerfeld and Kardashian are good friends — he frequently casts her little sister Kendall Jenner in runway show and recently photographed her with husband Kanye West for Harper’s Bazaar — so she’s likely to take the outspoken designer’s comments in stride. After all, Lagerfeld just gifted her not one but two Chanel bags, and we’re guessing he might send her some Chanel bling to replenish her jewelry box after this controversial comment.
