The gunman who shot 50 dead at a gay nightclub in Florida has been identified as Omar Mateen, 29. An American citizen born in New York. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the shooting. A fighter with the terror group was behind the horrific attack, according to Amaq News Agency, which is close to ISIS.
“The armed attack that targeted a gay night club in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida which left over 100 people dead or injured was carried out by an Islamic State fighter,” the agency reported.
The claim comes after the FBI said there were ‘suggestions’ gunman Omar Mateen had ‘leanings’ towards radical Islamic terrorism.
It also follows reports that Mateen called 911 and pledged allegiance to the head of ISIS before the attack.
The ex-wife of Mateen claims he was ‘unstable’ and repeatedly beat her during their marriage.
Speaking to The Washington Post, the woman revealed she met Mateen online around eight years ago.
She said she moved to Florida to marry him, but he soon became abusive and violent.
“He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that,” said the former wife, who wished to remain anonymous.
She added that her ex-husband worked as a guard at a juvenile detention centre and enjoyed going to the gym.
However, she said he showed no signs of being part of the radical Islam movement.
