Rainn Wilson called Johnny Depp a “wife beater” on Twitter on Friday, hours after Depp’s estranged wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic violence.
As earlier reported, Heard won a temporary restraining order on Friday after alleging Depp was verbally and physically abusive throughout their 15-month marriage. She specifically claimed he assaulted her last Saturday, two days before she filed for divorce, as well as during an incident last month. In both instances, Heard alleged the actor was drunk and high when he became violent with her.
An attorney for Depp, who is currently out of the country, responded to Heard’s declaration with a filing accusing her of using the allegations to get “premature” financial assistance before the details of their divorce are worked out. The lawyer further suggested Heard was using the claims to change the public discourse surrounding the couple’s split. And that discourse has dominated Twitter, where Depp’s name has been a trending topic for much of the day.
While most people tweeting about the situation are everyday Twitter users offering opinions and fans weighing in, Wilson so far is one of the few celebrities, if not the only, to make a social media remark. He tweeted, “Here’s what I learned today: there’s a 100% antibiotic resistant bacteria, bees killed a hiker, Cpt Jack Sparrow is a wife beater.”
Jack Sparrow, of course, is the name of Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean character. And while the movie star’s new film Alice Through The Looking Glass opened on Friday, another Pirates sequel is in post-production. Wilson’s tweet sparked a range of responses.
“The ACTOR that played Jack Sparrow is a wife beater. Jack Sparrow himself seems in pretty good shape – for a pirate,” one person replied. Another cracked, “Careful now Rainn, I think you meant ‘allegedly.’ Those bees can be awfully litigious.” And another expressed, “..what…what…do we know this or is it just speculation. I hope the latter.”
Depp has not personally commented on the allegations. He’s currently in Portugal, where he played a concert with his band Hollywood Vampires on Friday night.
