The Maelbeek metro station in Brussels reopened to passengers today Monday, April 25 after being shut down for over a month following the March 22 attacks in the city, which killed 34 people.
During the attacks, a suicide bomber detonated explosives on a Metro train at Maelbeek shortly after 9 a.m., killing 16 people, an hour after two other bombers killed many people at Brussels Airport.
A remembrance wall has been set up in the station and artist Benoit van Innis, whose tiled portraits were damaged in the attack, is said to be working on a project based on the massacre. Hand-written notes on the wall expressed condolences for those killed.
The scene at the heart of rush hour was calm, with commuters expressing patience over the month-long closure, despite criticism of Belgium's handling of the aftermath of the attacks.
