Johnny Depp to star as cop investigating the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G in 'Labyrinth'

Johnny Depp is once again diving into a true crime project in the upcoming drama Labyrinth, which follows the investigation into the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G.


Depp has signed on to play real-life Los Angeles police detective Russell Poole, who was responsible for investigating the deaths of the rap icons.

The film, helmed by Lincoln Lawyer director Brad Furman, is based on the 2002 book LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implication of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal.

Poole gained notoriety after expressing the belief that a number of corrupt cops were involved in the murders, and may have been tied to L.A. street gangs. Poole's accusations against fellow officers lead to him being forced into early retirement.

Depp's performance in Black Mass , in which he played real life mobster Whitey Bulger, earned him his best reviews in some time, but the actor has had a tumultuous summer. Apart from a public and contentious divorce from ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp's summer blockbuster, Alice Through the Looking Glass, was panned by critics, as was his performance as the Mad Hatter.

Labyrinth is set to begin filming later this year.
