Joel Parker Henderson, 42, killed Timothy “Timmy” O’Brien, 14, on January 5, 2013, in “retaliation” for the young man’s defence of his stepfather.
A Victorian supreme court jury found Henderson guilty of murder after only a few hours of deliberation in August.
Timothy O'Brien.
Henderson had denied murdering the 14-year-old, whose skull was caved in as he attempted to protect his stepfather from an ambush.
The boy was killed after he followed his stepfather Peter Williams to a house in Scarsdale, near Ballarat, to investigate a reported prowler.
Henderson was the first person to hit Timmy with the blunt back of the axe, before Wilson grabbed the axe and struck the boy’s head with its blade as Henderson stood nearby.
